Summer Camps in Texas Hill Country
February 10, 2012
Summer will be here before you know it, and now is the time to begin making plans. Here are suggestions for great camps where kids can spend a summer in the beautiful Texas Hill Country.
Camp Rio Vista (for boys): A summer tradition since 1921, Rio Vista is located along the scenic Guadalupe River in Ingram, Texas. It’s the oldest private, residential summer camp in the Southwest and has earned a reputation for providing quality programs for campers aged six to 16. Young men select their own activity schedule from a list of over 30 options. The cabins have electricity and the grounds and facilities are well maintained. Counselors are carefully chosen, and the counselor-to-camper ratio is 4:1.
Camp Sierra Vista (for girls): The sister camp to Camp Rio Vista, Sierra Vista was established in 1982. Girls aged 6 to 16 participate each summer in activities ranging from lacrosse to cheerleading to archery. Cabins are comfortable rock buildings with electricity and bathrooms. Located in Ingram, Texas, Sierra Vista is the perfect place for a young lady to spend a summer making memories that will last a lifetime.
Rent the camp: Vista Camps is the perfect location for your next gathering or event. The dining hall seats up to 220 and meals can be served buffet or family-style. The grounds have numerous meeting areas, including a beautiful outdoor chapel perfect for meetings, chapel services, or a wedding. The nearby Guadalupe River offers canoeing, swimming, and fishing, and the camp has three softball diamonds, two volleyball fields, eight tennis courts, a nine-hole chip and putt golf course, a lighted football field, two full-size indoor gyms, two archery ranges, two rifle ranges, a trap range, and a ropes course, all available with instruction.
Camp Waldemar (for girls): Founded in 1926, Waldemar is one of Texas’ best all-girl camps. It’s located in Hunt, Texas, so campers and counselors are treated to some of the most beautiful scenery Texas has to offer. The staff strives to build each camper’s character, refinement, and self-esteem. It’s a great place to soak up the summer sun, enjoy excellent food, and make lifelong friends.
The Texas Hill Country is an ideal spot for camping, whether in an air-conditioned cabin or a tent.
